Barkly Street is intended to be a best practice development encompassing excellent urban design, sustainability and design amenity outcomes. It is hoped that it will set a benchmark for sustainability and design amenity that future local developments may wish to aspire to.
The proposal is for 11 townhouse style apartments and contains a range of apartment types to help foster a diverse and close knit community. Each apartment has excellent access to natural light, good sized planted areas and landscaping. The new building is set within an existing brick warehouse with new building form, materiality and detailing all working to create distinction and harmony between the old and the new.
The development is characterized by a large open air atrium which forms the heart of the development and is part of the entry sequence for most apartments.
The development proposes a number of sustainable initiatives including a large dedicated bike parking area, solar voltaic cells, rainwater collection and storage, low energy use water heating units and a highly efficient thermal envelope contributed to by a highly detailed and considered timber construction system.
